On May 6, 1840, the British Post Office issued the world's first stamp. At the same time as the first postage stamp, the world's first postage stamp was also issued - an envelope in the value of 1d and 2d. On the front (address) page, it has an allegorical drawing by the English painter William Mulready, after whom the cover got its name. William Mulready was a prominent artist and member of the Royal London Academy of Fine Arts.
